Kollo

The department of Kollo is one of the thirteen departments in the region of Tillabéry. This district was created in 1980, then erected into a department thanks to the administrative redistricting of the early 1990s 2000.

The village of Kollo, capital of the department located approximately 30 km southeast of Niamey the capital, surrounds the entire administrative territory.

The department of Kollo, which is made up of eleven municipalities, one of which is urban, is an agricultural and livestock area crossed by the Niger River and presenting a composite landscape ranging from classified or protected forests to agricultural lands and glacis areas. The rural economy with significant potential in the agricultural sector, pastoral, of the environment… But the difficulties are unfortunately not lacking.

Breeding resources

Although it is not an exclusive breeding area, the department of Kollo nevertheless remains a land where breeding is practiced by a large part of the population or even by the entire population either in the form of extensive breeding or in the form of family breeding. Indeed, according to the departmental director of breeding, M. Boureima Moussa, the department has a significant livestock capital with a herd estimated at just over 751.000 Tropical Livestock Units (UBT). There are cattle, sheep and goats, horses, des blood, camels. To this is added a large quantity of poultry, namely chickens, the graffiti, domestic ducks, pigeons as well as exotic birds like geese, turkeys and some peacocks.

The department is also full of many private poultry farms.
