The Kortrijk Beguinage – His history
Dating from the 13th century, the Beguinage has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. You can stroll between the houses and in the interior courtyard, or visit the Saint-Matthieu chapel. This room houses the new interactive museum. This blend of authentic heritage and modern multimedia technology offers a new interpretation of the beguinage phenomenon.
The Artillery Tower, one of the few remains of medieval fortifications was erected in the 14th century and was originally a drinking water castle. The long history of the Notre-Dame church begins at the beginning of the 13th century.
The Chapel of the Counts was built in 1370 by Count Lodewijk van Male as a personal mausoleum. The Church of Our Lady now houses a series of important works of art such as the Laying of the Cross by Antoine van Dijck. Dating from the 12th century, the church of Saint-Martin has been rebuilt and transformed many times. The interior is decorated with remarkable works of art. The church tower contains Kortrijk's first real carillon and dates from the 19th century.
