A still life is an artistic genre, mainly pictorial which represents inanimate elements (alimony, game, fruits, fleurs, various objects…) organized in a certain way within the framework defined by the artist, often with a symbolic intention.

Charles Sterling,(in 1952) Dead nature specialist, propose the following definition :

"An authentic still life is born the day when a painter makes the fundamental decision to choose as a subject and to organize in a plastic entity a group of objects. That according to time and the environment where he works, He loads them with all kinds of spiritual allusions, does not change anything deep as an artist : That of imposing his poetic emotion to us before the beauty he saw in these objects and their assembly. »

Thus strangely, Still nature crosses all the art of XXe century when this genre is perceived by most people as stranger to contemporary art.

The genre has evolved and the representation of objects is no longer closely linked to a Christian symbolism, As she was at XVIIe century, But the meaning of still life has evolved with that of the object. It is therefore not surprising to find the still lifes as well in the surrealists, that in pop art, where he alone symbolizes a "consumer society".

At any rate, Dead nature is shared between its heavy past and its omnipresence within contemporary art.
