Seaside in Provence
Mill Roger (1929-2008)
Roger Muehl (1929-2008) is a painter, French sculptor and designer born in Geudertheim on 20 December 1929. Contemporary post-war artist, his notoriety is due to his almost figurative light paintings, illustrating gentle landscapes of Provence or Alsace, and whose complementary colors and cold tones best capture the typical atmosphere of a region.
his beginnings
He completed his studies at the National School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg in 1946 at 1948. Just graduated, the young artist collaborates with Germain Muller's theater troupe for the sets. His work was quickly noticed and appreciated since he created 1950 murals for the Ittenheim School and the Rennes School two years later. In 1954, Roger Mühl goes to the Belfort region to move to Montreux-Château. 1960, Mühl exhibits for the first time at the Galerie de Paris, then two years later at the School of Paris as well as at the Alsatian Art Gallery in Mulhouse. His work is already recognized by the public and institutions, so much so that he obtained the Prestige des Arts the same year.
The international scene
From 1961, his work is already recognized in other countries around the world. He first exhibited in Geneva, Switzerland., then to London, England, Milan in Italy, Dallas and New York in the United States, Cologne and Stuttgart in Germany, then Tokyo and Kyoto in Japan.
He does not stop exhibiting in France however since Roger Mühl works mainly in Provence where his workshop is located., but his painting is now appreciated on the international scene.
Numerous personal exhibitions are devoted to the artist. The Findlay Galleries in New York regularly exhibited his work until the year of his death..
Towns
Roger Mühl creates a series of cities that he likes to paint, among which we can find the Parisian districts, those of London, from New York and Venice, with the aim of restoring the atmosphere experienced while visiting them.
The orders
In the years 1970, the artist receives numerous orders, whether frescoes, stained glass windows or illustrations, as for Albert Camus (1913-1960) in 1978. Afterwards, he will exhibit with the greatest artists of his time, like Bernard Buffet (1928-1999), Henri Matisse (1869-1954), Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) or even Marc Chagall (1887-1985).
The work of the atmosphere
His work essentially revolves around the atmosphere. By working with light, complementary colors and neutral tones, the artist wishes to reproduce an atmosphere through subtle compositions. He mainly paints the landscapes of Provence and Alsace., gardens and flowers, but also seascapes and still lifes. When it represents the beaches or olive trees of the Côte d’Azur, it is the sunshine and nature burned by the sun with such particular hues that Roger Mühl strives to convey on his canvas.
When he brushes Brittany, it is more the humidity and freshness that shine through in its impasto. Whether with painting or lithography, Roger Mühl manages to reproduce the atmosphere of landscapes effectively and with great force, without however breaking the sweetness of his sensitivity, expressed in his mastery of color.
