The dombes pond landscape

Location of the dome

The Dombes corresponds to a plateau of moraine origin (sand deposit, pebbles and clay) located in the Ain department northeast of Lyon. It is limited to the west by the Saône valley and to the south by the Côtière which overlooks the Rhône plains.. To the east, the Ain river separates it from Bugey. Only the northern limit is unclear : gradually the Dombes comes into contact with the Bresse.

The story

From the marriage of Humbert de Beaujeu and Marguerite de Baugé, the Dombes, i.e. all of the territories of the House of Beaujeu located on the left bank of the Saône, also called at the time “Beaujolais part of the empire”, as opposed to clean Beaujolais, vassal of the kingdom, forms a sovereignty over which the princes exercise sovereign rights (notably mint money) and do not depend on the king of France.

This sovereignty has Trévoux as its capital and is made up of two non-contiguous territories with twelve châtellenies including those of Trévoux., Thoissey, Saint-Trivier, Amberieux, Beauregard, Villeneuve, Montmerle, Baneins and Woody, constitute the lower Dombes, to the west, and the other three, Chalamont, Lent and Le Chatelard form the upper Dombes, to the east.

The territory which separates the two Dombes with Villars and Châtillon is called the Bressan corridor..

In 1762, when the principality of Dombes was attached to the kingdom of France, it becomes a country of France, included in the general government of Burgundy, located between Bresse, the Lyonnais, Beaujolais and Mâconnais.

Nowadays, Dombes is, with Bresse, the Bugey, Revermont and the Pays de Gex, one of the “Pays de l’Ain”.
