Michel Kluge (1940-2003)

Judged by his father painter Constantin Kluge (1912-2003) as better painter than himself. He had a style close to Van Gogh, very troubled.

He died in Australia the same year as his father.

Constantin Kluge was born in Riga, in Latvia, the 29 January 1912, Russian parents. In 1925 his family emigrates “at the concession” French from Shanghai, where Kluge finished his studies at the French Municipal Lycée. From the age of seventeen, he becomes a very active member of the Shanghai Art Club. In 1931, Kluge leaves Shanghai for Paris to study architecture. He spent six years at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and in 1937 obtains a diploma with the title of French Governmental Architect.

The years spent studying and living in the Latin Quarter of Paris have created a particular attachment to the characteristic scenes of Paris.. He will stay in Paris for six months painting the sights of Paris in oil, preserving the scenes he loved so much. His childhood years spent in the Orient contributed to his love for painting. Kluge then returned to China, where he practiced his architectural profession for a short time. But when his friends persuaded him to exhibit his paintings, the exhibitions were so successful and aroused such enthusiasm that Kluge felt that the painting, his first love, could make it live.

A March 1950, rumors that the Chinese Communists might invade Hong Kong, brought Constantin Kluge to definitively leave Asia for Paris. He gets in 1951 an award and considerable attention at the Paris Salon. He was assigned in 1952 the Silver Medal as well as the Raymond Perreau prize given by the Taylor Foundation at the Salon. In 1962, he received the Gold Medal of the Salon. In 1990, Kluge is named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur by the French Ministry of Culture.
