Cathelin Bernard (1919-2004)
Bernard Cathelin is a French painter, born the 20 May 1919 in Paris and died on 17 avril 2004 in the same town.
His family was from Drôme and he remained very attached to this department throughout his life.. he is a student at the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris.
From 1947, he becomes a teacher, his talent is recognized ; he receives prizes then, in 1951, it was the meeting with Matisse that gave him lessons and advice.
After her marriage in 1954, he devotes himself entirely to painting.
That same year, he exhibits in New York, at the Findlay Gallery and the New York Herald Tribune dedicate a blanket to him.
Then begins a long series of trips around the world : South America, Asia, Oceania ; he will become one of the favorite painters of the Japanese.
The Valence Museum dedicated a retrospective of his work to him, during the summer 1997. This exhibition, attracting local visitors as well as others from around the world, helped break Museum attendance records.
In 2000 , the Shanghai Art Museum, in China, organized a forty-year retrospective exhibition of the works of Bernard Cathelin.
Bernard Cathelin passed away on 17 avril 2004, but major exhibitions are still devoted to him in France, while others are in preparation around the world.
