Francis Cariffa (chamber 1890- Challes Le Waters 1975)

Born in Chambery on 25 August 1890, Francis Cariffa will very quickly take an interest in the arts. He devoted himself in his youth to the theater. Passion he shares with his older brother Antoine. This one leaves for Paris, where he plays alongside Charles Dullin, Louis Jouvet in particular. Francis must join him but in 1914 the first world war breaks out. His brother is killed, on the other hand, as a test pilot, Francis is seriously injured. He stays after the war near his mother, in Savoy, very sick.

Since then, it is in art that he immerses himself. He exhibits in 1924, at the Simonson gallery in Paris where the State bought him a canvas. This recognition confirms. From 1927, he exhibits everywhere in France, Paris, Nice, Lyon…

The mountain :

On his property in Challes-les-Eaux, he paints alongside his wife Sonca, herself a painter. His daughter Tonia, her too, becomes an emeritus painter and pupil of Fernand Léger. He is friends with other Savoyard painters like Joseph Communal, Jean Communal or Lucien Poignant.

Francis Cariffa has the mountain as his favorite subject., however the surroundings of Chambéry appear on his canvases as well as the Lac du Bourget and other typical places of Savoy.

We also recognize it, as being an orientalist painter because of his many paintings made in Morocco. He makes decorations for the liner “Normandy”.

He dies on 30 December 1975 in Challes les Eaux.
