The stencil technique
We can give as the origin of the stencil the technique that the ancestors of men used to decorate the caves of the image of their hand, by blowing a pigment to bring out only the contours.
This technique was used in the publishing from the XVIIe century, especially for the printing of liturgical texts (The large format of choir books was not compatible with mobile characters.
The application was done manually using a brush, thanks to stencils generally made in a brass and zinc alloy.
At XIXe century, stencil paint, in several covers, has been envisaged, without success, as a way to teach the art of color, under the name of Color to the boss and oriental painting. The stencil also served for photographic colorization and cinema films.
Miméographer reproduction allowed, Before the massive development of photocopier and computer printing, Quick printing by a stencil made up of a sheet of paper covered with a waterproof varnish, Porous by the imprint of a ball pen or a typewriter from which the inactive ribbon has been inactivated.
Screen printing perfected the stencil printing system. The fine cuts of a cut cardboard are very fragile, They are replaced by varnished parts of a synthetic silk screen.
The 20th century
In disciplines, One of the most important in urban art appears regularly in Paris, at the beginning of the years 1980, and various previous and rear periods in other cities and countries.
Street action continuity and the multiplication of image conservation supports, via photography, then cause a kind of monitoring of "urban traces" at least for Paris.
Then born several "names" of the stencil. Blek the rat is often designated as the starting point of the Parisian movement at the start 1980, But Marie Rouffet in 1982 said he saw it before Canada.
It is called "stencil graffiti", "Urban stencil" or "street stencil", Historically associated with free figuration.
Pochoiristes are often street painters, using a cardboard or metal matrix, To reproduce drawings on the walls, or any other flat surface.
In the early years 1980, Paris sees a host of artists appearing expressing themselves on the walls.
This movement of urban graffiti is experiencing artists recognized today by official circuits and a much wider community of individuals expressing themselves for reasons as varied as there are colors…
The airograph technique
Airbrush or also called "Airbush" in English, constitutes a minimalist paint gun whose dimensions are similar to a pen (more or less large scope depending on the use). The main asset is to be able to paint or color the support of your choice through a multitude of mediums (paintings, inks or pigments) Without contact with the support. This specificity is at the origin of its creation during the years 1880 at 1900. Its creation comes from an American watercolorist called Charles L. Burdick who want to apply layers of paints to water above the others without changing the previous ones. He filed the patent in 1893 But another American described the same tool during the year 1888.
