China's Dan Tankas or people of Vietnam

A minority population

The Tankas or People of the Boats is a minority population in southern China. These fishermen traditionally live in junks on the coasts of Guangdong provinces, Guangxi, Fujian, Hainan and Zhejiang as well as Hong Kong and Macau.

Au Vietnam, they are the Dan, a subgroup Ngai Ngai (Hakka people of Vietnam who speak Hakka, Sino-Tibetan language).

They are considered part of the Han ethnic group.. Their mother tongue derives from the Fuzhou dialect (capitale du Fujian). The Tankas are a relatively independent people and continue to observe many unique customs..

Prehistory

Yet few people really know who the inhabitants of these boats are, called Tankas. Their presence in southern China seems attested since prehistoric times., but they would have been driven out by the Han invasion of Emperor Qin (221 of. J.C.. at 206 of. J.C.). Having subsequently revolted under the Tang dynasty (618-907), access to the land would have been forbidden to them. But these are just some of the explanations for the existence of this water people in Hong Kong as theories differ about them..

They have long been wrongly called “sea gypsies” by the English who did not know why they maintained such a different way of life from the other three ethnic groups in Hong Kong. So the Hoklos, venus you Fujian, were sedentary fishermen. The Started, or “visitors”, from the southern mountains, are traditionally farmers, while the Points, literally “the people here”, refers to Hans who came from Canton, mostly traders settled north of Kowloon.

From the years 1960, the Tankas began to leave their boats little by little to come and settle on the foreshore, transforming the landscape of Linjiang Village. Between 1960 and the end of the years 1980, we counted 146 households representing 612 people who came to settle on dry land, giving birth to the village of Xipi. Settling on earth then became the biggest dream of the majority of families..
