Deforestation and digging of ponds

All in length, extended to the north, it is made up of several interesting environments for biodiversity. A wetland, formerly mown or grazed, occupies the lower part, street side. Now deforested during restoration work with a first pond around which the shaggy willowherb and marsh sedge flourish. further north, a strip of willows maintained, and a second pond is dug. This area also has some old pollard willows, in contact with the neighboring horse pasture. These trees are an ideal habitat for the little owl and present a great biological asset for the site.. Other species of birds observed, especially white warblers, black-headed and babbler, effarvatte and verderolle rousserolles, European goldfinch or kingfisher.

Given the characteristics of the environments present, the reserve will also become a very important site for amphibians. Reptiles will also find their happiness : piles of wood are left on site to encourage their presence. Insect side, the number of species is already significant; dragonflies frequent the site and diving beetles and other aquatic insects quickly colonize the new ponds.

At the bottom of the reserve, a grove of willows is still in place. The reedbed also begins at this level, but the area still wooded, and the plant formation extends mainly into the neighboring terrain. Further, quite inaccessible at the moment, an alignment of willows delimits the reserve to the northwest. Lack of maintenance, these trees are no longer tadpoles but they are destined to become so again.

Extension project

Here is a task for future management which will also be the occasion for maintenance mowing and the digging of other ponds.. But the most important project for the municipality of Anderlecht is to extend the current reserve on the plots to the north. The website, classified as an area of ​​great biological interest, benefits from passive protection but suffers from the progression of trees and the landfall of the wetland. The municipality decides to keep the rural character of the whole Neerpede valley and the adjacent areas. In addition to the preservation of natural landscapes and biodiversity, there is also a desire from the municipality to redevelop the nurturing role. The Neerpede area had indeed, fifty years ago, many small market gardeners who have gradually disappeared.
