Roger Auguste Charles Quillery

(Ronchamp 06/05/1914- Dammary Les Lys 02/12/1991)

It is formed in his youth by the famous Max Ingrand (stained glass master glassmaker of international renown), His work began around the Fauvist movement, it evolved around Cubisme and eventually a brilliantly around the abstract movement. He also realized tapestries to large sizes for larger homes of the era.

His pictorial works are very rare because, fleeing the tumult of Paris, he made very few exhibitions.

But something very important, he refused his lifetime to show his paintings (painting and gouaches) and kept them secretly in his workshop in Melun.

His works are characterized by the juxtaposition of contrasting forms, simple, often borrowed from Cubism, serving a very strong symbolism. He lets out a more inventive and more productive.

Ronchamp Memorial to the Great Renaissance Festivals—M..MAULINI—-1953

Memorial of the great festivals 1953 Rennaissance de ronchamp

It was in front of a room full of admirers that Doctor MAULINI presented the artist to the personalities who attended the Renaissance celebrations.
SPEECH BY DOCTOR MAULINI
“I present to you my cousin, the painter Roger QUILLERY, of Champagney. He is well known in our region since his last exhibition at the Hôtel de Ville de Lure. The opening of the exhibition took place under the chairmanship of Mr. LARRIEU, former Prefect of Haute-Saône, friend and admirer of the artist.
Today, Roger QUILLERY's fame has gone beyond the limits of our province, and we find him every year at the Galerie des Mages in Vence, in Vallauris with PICASSO, MATISSE, CHAGAL, contemporary painting cracks, and the best painters of the French Riviera.
We also see him every year at the Indépendants in Paris, in Marcel ROUFF au King Charles. Each time his exhibitions elicit comments, from reviews in daily newspapers and in the major specialized press to art criticism: the "Literary News", « France-Illustration », « Arts », " The painter"…
Roger QUILLERY is a modern painter. He understands nature through the complex harmony of colors and shapes, and gives us back his personal feelings after a deep meditation. These three times constitute the schema of artistic thought..

The first time,

that of perception, lets us guess the treasure of visions that an artist like QUILLERY can access.

The second step,

the most abstract, but also the most essential from a personality point of view, engages the artist in all the depth of his sensitivity.

The third step,

that of exteriorization, allows the artist to return to nature in a plastic form all that he has drawn from it. It is in the expression of these three times that the artist finds the limits of his destiny : to feel, to build, to offer.
Thus to define the painting of QUILLERY, we must not forget that we are in the presence of a man in all his power, a builder, which poses its colors by seats and maintains them securely in a black frame. We are in front of partitioned landscapes where each colored touch lives by itself intensely in its charcoal bonds..
This exhibition, initiated under the sign of the June solstice, is for the artist the starting point of a new pictorial period. His painting has freed itself to enter into the order of rigidity and the majesty of colors. This cloisonne painting, hard and precise like enamel, carries within it a singular charm. “

Another work by the artist proposed by the Gallery.
