Douarnenez, city ​​of sardine history,

city ​​of three ports : the old port of Rosmeur, Port-Rhu and the fishing port.

Walk in Douarnenez

Situated at 20 kilometers from Quimper, Douarnenez displays its personality steeped in its maritime past. The city is a juxtaposition of the most diverse scenes : wander through the old town and its sloping alleys so intimately linked to the epic of the sardine ; visit the harbor estuary- Rhu ; tread the land of the mysterious Ile Tristan, only at low tide and guided ; Follow him Sardine path which takes you to Port du Rosmeur, where more than 800 sardine boats, to the sacred place of fishermen, sailor's shelter.

Douarnenez conceals many other treasures such as its natural site of Plomarc’h, village with traditional Breton houses, located a few steps from the port of Rosmeur. It contains one of the most important Gallo-Roman industrial archaeological sites in northern Europe for its production of garum, sauce based on sardines and herbs sold very expensive throughout Gaul, there is 2000 ans… and is also a very popular place for walks with families (with animals, closed, jeux…).

the harbor museum offers a museum on land and a museum afloat dedicated to maritime heritage. Renovated in 2006, the onshore museum introduces you to maritime societies and cultures. At the museum afloat, five boats are open to visitors and invite you to discover the life of the crews by browsing the boats from the hold to the wheelhouse.
