Highland

the Grand Canyon or Grand Cañon, in English Grand Canyon, a hopi Ongtupqa, En Yavapai Wi:kaʼi:the, is a canyon of the United States located in northwestern Arizona. The throat was dug by the Colorado river in the plateau of the same name. Founded in 1919, The Grand Canyon National Park covers a protected territory of 4 927 km2. It is frequented each year by more than four and a half million visitors. The diversity and natural and landscape singularity of the site have made it recognized World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1979.

The Grand Canyon is located in the southwest of the United States, in the north of the state of Arizona.

The dimensions of the Grand Canyon are gigantic, Hence his name (in English, grand does not mean big, but both immense, imposing, grand and superb). It extends over approximately 450 km Long between Lake Powell and Lake Mead, dont 350 km are located in the National Park. Its average depth is 1 300 meters, with a maximum of more than 1 600 meters. Its width varies from 5,5 km at 30 km.

The Grand Canyon is neither the deepest, nor the most imposing terrestrial canyons :

Le Canyon de Colca (3 400 m depth) and the Cotahuasi canyon (3 550 meters deep) in Peru, have the Yulung Tsangpo in China, the Copper ravine North of Mexico and Hells Canyon in Idaho are deeper gorges. The site is however remarkable for the views offered to visitors and for the geological layers that appear on the canyon slopes, well known to geologists. The strata tell the story of the North American continent. On the other hand, The place is the spectacular result of the work of erosion, in particular that of the Colorado river which flows below.
