The Great Sands, the charm of yesteryear

Les Grands Sables at Le Pouldu was the cradle of the seaside resort of Le Pouldu. The first bathers appeared in the years 1850.

The first two villas were built near the beach around 1875. The first hotel opened in 1887.

It was at this time that the painters of the Pont-Aven school stayed at the " Beach refreshment stall »Which greatly contributed to the reputation of the site.

"At the top of the big sandy cliff, dominant la mer, […],
a small inn was at the edge
of a small road that ended at the ocean. no neighbors : the moor and the sea. […] A banal modern Breton house, resembling all his fellows. »
Maxime Maufra, Painter's remarks, unpublished manuscript.

Built in 1888-1889 on two adjoining lots, this isolated house a stone's throw from the sea is the property of Marie Henry. The young woman establishes her business there, the beach refreshment bar, a drinking establishment, and offers a few rooms for people passing through.

“So that in the middle of this summer of 1890, the poor little house of Pouldu sheltered under his roof : Meyer de Haan in the big room ; Gauguin in the courtyard room, M. Serusier in the room on the street ; M. Filiger in the workshop ; the owner in the bathroom ; and the maid in the refreshment bar. »
Henri Motheré to Charles Chassé in Gauguin and the Pont-Aven group : unpublished documents, 1921.
