The Old Bridge of Mostar

Built in 1565 par l'architecte Architect Hayreddin, pupil of Ottoman architect Sinan, it is made up of a single back-to-back arch of 27 m range, 4 m width and 29 m length. It overlooks the Neretva from a height of 29 meters, sometimes more because of the water retention of a hydroelectric power station located upstream. Two fortified towers protected it : the Helebija tower on the right bank and the Tara tower on the left bank, both dating from XVIIe century.

The speed bump design of this bridge gives it great strength, so well that it has withstood all conflicts for centuries, except the last. During the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 1993, Croats and Bosnians clashed for just under a year in Mostar. The bridge was destroyed by Croatian HVO forces on to interrupt the Bosnian passages.

It was rebuilt under the aegis of the’UNESCO and some WAS. The 1 088 stones were cut according to the original techniques.
