Entrance to the harbor of Volendam Netherlands 1967

Berthe J.

Very close to Amsterdam, located on the IJsselmeer lake, you will find the old fishing village of Volendam. It is known for its pretty harbor, fishing trade, its authentic Dutch character, and its traditional costumes

The historic village is located on the edge of Lake Markermeer, and once had direct access to the North Sea via the Zuiderzee Sea. Due to its good location near the water, many fishermen have settled in the village. Compared to other regions of North Holland, Volendam has many Catholic residents who stand out from other Dutch people not only because of their beliefs, but because of their typical costumes and their own dialect, le Volendams.

Volendam is also known throughout Holland for the love of its people for music : several famous musicians who left their mark with their own style of music, le Palingsound ( "sound of the eel", see below), come from Volendam. By the way, if you visit Volendam, consider tasting a smoked eel sandwich !
