myrtle

Emigration has particularly marked the county from Murtosa, town of about 10.000 current inhabitants, in the central region of Portugal, in the district of Aveiro. Internal emigration matters (to Lisbon or Porto), but especially external, the myrtlemen particularly directed towards the United States, including Newark, New Jersey, twinned with Murtosa since 2001. This migration story is, for years 1980, taken in hand by the municipality which wishes to pay tribute to these emigrants, “examples of tenacity and sacrifice, who knew how to succeed in the countries of arrival, always with an eye on their country of origin, myrtle, where year after year, they came back, often in summer, to lessen their nostalgia”.

Murtosa Emigrant Festival

It is organized every year at the end of July / early August and for several days various activities pay tribute to emigrants through festive events, political or religious. Valuing emigration myrtle tree is approached from two main angles : on the one hand, the celebration of the migratory phenomenon and the homage paid to myrtlemen concerned, on the other hand, the promotion of the region in a tourism and development perspective through multi-sited “emissaries”. The events of the party vary the focus between the parish from Murtosa, the county and the Ria de Aveiro region, by presenting specificities at each geographical scale.
