Abstraction géométrique

Labstraction in art is opposed to figurative and narrative representations, it results from expressive forms and not from representative forms. With regard to the history of art, very ancient cultures dabbled in abstraction, whether in India or among Native American peoples.

The term "abstraction" can also refer to the various abstract arts that characterize modern art from the beginning of the XXe century.

Drawing its origins from abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction appears in the wake of constructivism during the XXe century and constitutes a certain form of opposition to surrealism. Its leading figures are mainly the painters Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg.

Artists interested in this branch of abstract arts seek purity and simplification through the use of geometric shapes. Their canvases are characterized by the representation of squares, circles, rectangles, triangles and crosses, as well as by the use of a minimum of colors. Geometric abstraction is a dominant aspect in the works of Abstraction-Creation, a group of artists created in 1931.
